The Many Benefits of Sending a Child to Summer Camp

On an annual basis, thousands of American parents consider how exactly “summer break” should play out for their youngster(s): Vacation, a few short weekend trips, sporting events, swimming lessons, music lessons, dance classes, day care, day camp - the list goes on and on. One option that is often overlooked is the opportunity for kids to participate in a variety of summer camps.

The benefits of sending a child to summer camp can range from physical, artistic, mental and emotional development to the development of faith and spirituality. Ultimately, a summer camp often proves to be a young person's first true taste of independence and personal responsibility, putting to test the social and problem-solving skills he or she has been taught at home and in his or her many educational environments.

Benefits of Sending a Child to Summer Camp

The benefits of attending a summer camp are as unique as the camp attendee, and can be as specific as a camper's interests. There are summer camps that are solely focused on outdoor adventure, team building exercises and personal development, while other camps focus on activities such as the arts and media. Programs are available for a wide variety of ages, generally beginning around age 10 and topping out with the teenage high school senior. Several camps offer youth programs for younger campers as well, depending on the child's social comfort level and sense of independence.

Many summer camps offer physical challenges, providing children with an environment in which their problem-solving and teamwork skills are put to the test. What comes across as merely a fun, physical challenge to many children is in fact a test offering valuable life skills to take to their next level of education, as well as providing them with leadership and teamwork skills that will help in any social or work environment.

The Benefits of Physical Challenges and Outdoor Adventures at Summer Camps

Anyone who has ever attended a summer camp is certainly able to share more than a few stories. Even the teenage veterans of summer camps can attest to the fact that spending the day away from home and family isn't always the easiest experience. Campers must become self-reliant and take on a new level of social responsibility. What better way to teach these skills of personal development than through a few outdoor adventures designed to build bonds between new friends while teaching skills of leadership, patience and teamwork?

Some of the most enjoyable outdoor activities found in summer camp youth programs have to do with physical challenges and conquering a few fears. It is perhaps true that there is no better training in life than to learn persistence and perseverance when approaching all of life's problems and challenges. Rock climbing, hiking, ropes and obstacle courses are all designed to teach the three P's - Patience, Persistence and Perseverance.
